| Incorrect Change | here’s the situation: you are at a store, have made a purchase, clerk says "$16" and you hand over a $20. he then gives you $6 back in change. do you take the cash and skedaddle? or do you point out the mistake and give up $2?
does it matter what store it is? what the clerk’s attitude is?

| Incorrect Change | I had it the other day, I was at a service station (petrol station / gas station whatever you call it), and I brought Panadol (I dunno what Americans call it, headache tablets), sports drink and a few other stuff. Came to about $12 dollars. I paid with a $20, the guy gave me my $20 back and $8 dollars. I did point out that he indeed made a mistake and gave him the $20 back.
On the rare occasion, if the clerk is a jackass I will keep the surplus.
It’s funny. If you get more change than intended most people don’t say anything. Otherwise you complain immediately. Much like the tax department. If you owe them money you got 30 days to pay it. If they owe you money, you get it when they’re ready to pay you.

| Incorrect Change | returned the excess once, to a clerk who actually got pissed when I did.
This exact thing happened to me today, and when I gave back the extra, the clerk was shocked and very apprieciative.

| Incorrect Change | In response to ILDT’s post, my first job you had a discrepancy of $10 before you got in trouble. My second job was $2. My till was rarely down, however frequently up..lol
In my current job, a few years ago, I ran up a bill for $2500 and nearly got asked to pay it back. Upon pointing out that another person ran up another bill after me for $15,000 with nothing happening, I then asked how come the second person got away without having to pay it back, yet I did.
In the end I was told to forget about it :D

| Incorrect Change | If the clerk had a "piss poor" attitude - I’d keep the $6.00’s but then I’d give him a $2.00 tip so he’d have a better attitude next time.
Or take the $6.00’s & put $2.00 in the "charity" cup on the counter.
But seriously, I always give it back if I notice the mistake. Sometimes I just take the change & don’t look or count it.
In a supermarket a few months ago I had this little "prick" for a cashier. He was talking about things to his friend at the next register that he shouldn’t have been talking about in front of customers (especially the female one’s) while he was scanning items - wasn’t even looking at what he was doing! I was bagging, when he finished, he gave me the total. Normally, I’d give the money & keep bagging - this time I didn’t, just kept bagging, didn’t even acknowledge him. He just stood there & didn’t help. I knew if I gave him the money he’d throw the change back & start ringing up the next customers & slide their food into mine before I was finished bagging (’cause I saw him do that to somebody else while I was waiting on line). I gave him a $100 bill - he made the change (while still talking to his friend), put’s change on counter without even looking at me & starts scanning the next person. I didn’t even pick up the change - I just told him to stop! He looked at me like I was from another planet. I told him to pick up my change & count it out to me!
He gave me a foul look & said, "what the fuck is your problem" (his exact words - almost his last words). I’m not very nice when somebody pisses me off in that type of way but that’s another story!
Most change mistakes happen because clerks don’t count out change because they’re too lazy or too busy!

| Incorrect Change | I would give it back. I don’t want the bad karma. Although, I must admit, one time or another I didn’t realize
that the overage i got back until I made another purchase. Should i have gone back later to get the money to that cashier? (I didn’t) Karma probably got me somewhere.

| Incorrect Change | I always give it back, regardless of the clerk’s attitude. It is the right thing to do. Also, despite what I’ve heard, I seldom run into rude clerks or waitstaff.
I’ve also have had clerks catch mistakes that I’ve made.

| Incorrect Change | Here’s two stories I heard. One is where I live and the other is from the states
First one I hear was where some security guards were reloading a ATM cash machine. They loaded the $20 bay with $20,000 and instead of putting $20,000 of $10 notes into the $10 holder they put in $20,000 in $20 notes. From Friday to Sunday morning the machine gave out $8,000 in surplus money. By Sunday morning for four hours there were two police officers guarding the machine not allowing anyone to use it
Second story I heard was where some guy reprogrammed an ATM to think it was dispensing $5 notes instead of $20 notes. Needless to say you ask for $20 and you get $80. guy got caught though.

| Incorrect Change | defintely give it back. i always give it back, why? very simple, because its not mine. the cashier is handling someone else’s money.
iwas a cashier once and i accidently didn’t give the right change back.(shorted the customer5.00$) i had line at the drawer so i couldn’t leave to return the correct change to the customer. i grabbed another employee to cover my drawer so i could go after the customer whom i short changed. iran out to the parking lot gave the customer the 5.00. they were very appreciative and i felt good. i didn’t become this honest until i found out how much it hurts when someone.
